Evidence Action: Safe Water Now

Evidence Action operates four programs, plus their Accelerator. Donations to this match will be treated as unrestricted, and allocated towards Evidence Action’s highest priority needs:

  • Safe Water Now:
Over 2 billion people lack access to water that is safe to drink, and unsafe water is responsible for more than one million deaths each year. Unsafe drinking water is a leading risk factor for infectious diseases, exacerbates malnutrition, and is the most common cause of diarrhoea — the world’s second-leading cause of child mortality. Safe Water Now programming in Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, and India uses innovative, low-cost approaches like chlorine dispensers and automatic in-line chlorination to treat water, preventing death and disability.

  • Deworm the World:
There are more than 895 million children at risk for parasitic worm infections like soil-transmitted helminths and schistosomiasis,[3] primarily in poor communities with inadequate sanitation around the world. These infections interfere with children’s nutrient uptake, often leading to anemia, malnourishment, and impaired mental and physical development. As a result, children who are infected are less likely to attend school. Deworm the World works with governments to design, scale, and sustain cost-effective mass deworming programmes.  Since 2014, Deworm the World has helped deliver over 2 billion deworming treatments to children in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Kenya and Malawi  – for less than 50 cents per treatment on average.

  • Equal Vitamin Access:
Iron deficiency anemia is a leading cause of childhood malnutrition  and disability in low- and middle-income countries. Equal Vitamin Access provides end-to-end support to governments in India and Malawi to provide iron and folic acid supplementation to children at risk of anemia, leveraging Evidence Action’s school-based deworming platform (Deworm the World, described above) to deliver these supplements in the most cost-effective way. In 2023 alone, this program reached 35.8 million children with weekly treatments, giving them a better chance to develop into strong, healthy adults.

  • Syphilis-Free Start:
Maternal syphilis causes more stillbirths and infant deaths than HIV, yet it’s easily preventable — with an inexpensive dual HIV/syphilis test and a single shot of penicillin. Evidence Action helps governments bring low-cost syphilis screening and treatment to pregnant women through antenatal care clinics.

  • Evidence Action’s Accelerator:
Evidence Action’s Accelerator drives new program development. Through a rigorous process, Evidence Action tests groundbreaking health and development interventions, selecting those with a proven ability to reduce the burden of poverty at scale.
