Our Mission

What is Effective Giving?

Effective giving combines the heart and the head in making giving decisions.

Most of us base our giving decisions on the heart: a loved one has suffered from a disease, a friend asks us to invest in a cause, a local organization asks us to support the community. This personal connection to giving is good and necessary. It’s what inspires charitable donations in the first place.

But truly making an impact also requires the head. We need to base our giving on objective analyses of the impact of our donations. It is important to identify what different organizations actually achieve for each rupee they receive. This is because some charities can provide hundreds or even thousands of times greater impact per rupee than others, as measured by the number of lives saved or the amount of suffering reduced per rupee donated.

Today, India is one of the most unequal countries of the world, at once home to 140 billionaires and over 80 million people subsisting on less than US$1.90 per day. India’s post-independence “economic miracle” has left us with a deeply unequal society. Between 1980 and 2015, the top 0.1% of earners captured a higher share of total growth than the entire bottom 50%. During the Covid-19 pandemic, India’s billionaires saw their wealth increase by nearly 13 lakh crore INR (or US$178 billion) while 122 million people lost their jobs. If you are reading this, in English and with internet access, you probably fall at the higher end of the spectrum of wealth and privilege. Effective giving can allow you to fulfill your moral obligation to the less privileged among us and tangibly work towards bridging India’s economic divide.

Effective giving requires you to grapple with the question of where your donation could do the most good and to give to areas where you could maximize your impact, as not all charities are created equal. Consider if the charity you are supporting is cost-effective, evidence-backed, and well-run? If not, you may be short-changing yourself as well as those you’re trying to help.

Effective Charities in India

The Life You Can Save welcomes conversations about assessing and identifying highly effective local charities in India. If you are interested in funding research to identify highly effective Indian charities, please contact info@thelifeyoucansave.org.

In the meantime, we have listed below The Life You Can Save recommended highly effective global charities operating in India which you could consider donating to.

Please note that, with the exception of PSI India and Educate Girls, your donations will be directed to your selected charity’s global operations. We encourage you to contact the charity directly if you would like to earmark your donation specifically for the charity’s work in India.

Evidence Action

Evidence Action’s mission is to be a world leader in scaling evidence-based and cost-effective programs to reduce the burden of poverty.

In India, their Deworm the World Initiative supports school-based deworming. The treatment is delivered through existing education infrastructure, administered by teachers with support from the health system. This approach is highly cost-effective, well accepted by communities, and efficiently targets the population group at greatest risk for infection: children. In addition, as part of their accelerator project, they are running an iron and folic acid supplementation program in India to provide technical assistance to the Government of India and selected state governments to improve program delivery and coverage.
